I’m Gary Moskowitz and I’m a music nerd, so it’s only fitting that I have a newsletter called MUSIC NERD, because music needs nerds and music nerds, like anyone, need community. Let’s talk about music!
I’m a journalist, journalism educator, and musician. I’ve written and reported on music, the music industry, and arts & culture for The Economist, The New York Times, Mother Jones Magazine, TIME Magazine, San Francisco Weekly, Red Bulletin Magazine, and other publications. I teach journalism at UC Berkeley and San Francisco State University.
I’ve played trumpet in Florida ska bands, Los Angeles ska/reggae/jazz bands, a London Afrobeat band, an Oakland punk-soul band, and funk-groove bands in San Francisco, and have toured the US and Europe. I played trumpet in my high school marching band and was in the Florida State University marching band. My current band is RADIO VELOSO, a modern funk-soul-groove band in San Francisco.
